Tinboeth Castle (which means Castell Tinboeth in Welsh) was a castle from the Middle Ages. It was located in Wales, right between the villages of Llanbister and Llanbadarn Fynydd. The castle sat on a curve of the River Ithon.

People believe that Roger Mortimer built this castle in the 1200s. After Mortimer passed away, the castle slowly fell apart. Today, not much of the original building is left.

Where Was Tinboeth Castle?

The spot where Tinboeth Castle once stood is about 11 miles (18 km) from Llandrindod Wells. It's found between the villages of Llanbister and Llanbadarn Frynydd. The castle was built right next to the River Ithon.

The castle was actually built inside an old Iron Age hillfort. This hillfort was quite large, about 100 meters (328 feet) across. Experts from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales think the castle had a special gatehouse. This gatehouse had two towers and was on the north-east side.

The outer part of the castle, called the outer bailey, used the old hillfort as its defense. The inner part, the inner bailey, had a strong stone wall. You would enter this inner area through the gatehouse.

History of Tinboeth Castle

It is thought that Roger Mortimer built Tinboeth Castle. The first time we see the castle mentioned in history is in 1282. This date is probably very close to when it was actually built.

Roger Mortimer also owned another castle called Cymaron. Records show that Cymaron Castle was probably left empty when Tinboeth Castle was being built. After Mortimer died, the castle became the property of the King or Queen.

Wales became much more peaceful after this time. Because of the peace, a castle like Tinboeth was not really needed anymore. So, it slowly became a ruin.

Today, you can still see some earthworks, which are like mounds in the ground. These are believed to be the remains of the old walls. There isn't much stone left above the ground, except for parts of the gatehouse that have fallen down.
