Discover the Tiraumea River

The Tiraumea River starts high up in the mountains. Its source is on the slopes of Mount Hutton. This mountain is part of the Braeburn Range. Mount Hutton stands tall at about 1,400 meters (4,600 feet) high.

Where the River Flows

From Mount Hutton, the river flows mostly towards the northwest. It passes through a spot called the Tiraumea Saddle. This saddle is about 672 meters (2,205 feet) above sea level. The river then travels until it joins another river. It flows into the Tutaki River. This meeting point is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of a town called Murchison.

Exploring the Area

You can explore the area around the Tiraumea River. There is a special path called the Tiraumea Track. This track follows the river's entire length. It goes all the way from the Tiraumea Saddle down to Lake Rotoroa. Lake Rotoroa is a lovely lake in the Tasman region.

Along the river, you will find a back-country hut. This hut is managed by the Department of Conservation. It provides a place for people to stay while exploring the wilderness.
