Who is Titania?

Titania is a strong and proud fairy queen. She rules over the fairy world with her husband, Oberon. Fairies in Shakespeare's time were often seen as magical beings. They could be both helpful and mischievous. Titania is a good example of this. She has a special connection to nature and magic.

Titania's Role in the Play

In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Titania and Oberon are having a big argument. This fight is causing problems in the human world too. Their disagreement is about a young Indian boy. Titania has taken the boy into her care. She loves him very much because he is the child of one of her friends who passed away.

The Argument with Oberon

Oberon wants the Indian boy to be his personal helper. He asks Titania to give the boy to him. Titania refuses to give up the child. This makes Oberon very angry. He decides to play a trick on her to get what he wants.

The Love Potion Trick

Oberon asks his mischievous servant, Puck, for help. Puck is a fairy known for his tricks. Oberon tells Puck to find a special flower. The juice of this flower has magical powers. If put on someone's eyelids while they sleep, it makes them fall in love with the first thing they see when they wake up.

Titania Falls in Love

Puck puts the love potion on Titania's eyes while she is sleeping. Meanwhile, a group of actors is rehearsing in the forest. One of them is a weaver named Bottom. Puck decides to play another trick. He changes Bottom's head into that of a donkey.

When Titania wakes up, the first thing she sees is Bottom with his donkey head. Because of the love potion, she immediately falls deeply in love with him. She treats him like a king and showers him with affection. This is very funny for the audience to watch.

The End of the Spell

Oberon watches Titania's strange love for Bottom. He feels satisfied that his trick worked. Eventually, he decides to undo the spell. He tells Puck to remove the donkey head from Bottom. He also gives Titania another magical herb. This herb removes the love potion's effect from her eyes.

When Titania wakes up again, she is confused. She cannot believe she was in love with a donkey. Oberon and Titania then make up. They agree to end their argument. The play ends with them dancing and blessing the human couples.
