Politics and Public Service

Becoming a Member of the Legislature

Titus Allooloo was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in 1987. He ran as a candidate in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election and won the election for the Amittuq area.

Serving as a Cabinet Minister

He was re-elected for his second term in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. During this time, he became a cabinet minister. A cabinet minister is like a leader for a specific part of the government. Titus Allooloo was in charge of several important areas, including Culture and Communications, Transportation, Education, and Renewable Resources.

Challenges in Office

While he was the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Mr. Allooloo faced some challenges. He made a decision to replace the town council in Iqaluit, Nunavut, with a special administrator. He also had disagreements with the Premier, Nellie Cournoyea, about his travel expenses. Because of these issues, he decided to step down from his cabinet roles on November 22, 1994.

After His Cabinet Role

Even after stepping down from his cabinet positions, he tried to be re-elected in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. However, he was not successful and was defeated by another candidate, Mark Evaloarjuk.

Working for Nunavut

Helping Create Nunavut

After leaving the Legislature, Titus Allooloo continued to work hard for the creation of the new territory of Nunavut. He traveled around the territories to encourage people to choose Iqaluit as the capital city in the 1995 Nunavut capital plebiscite.

Setting Up Electoral Boundaries

Later, he became a member of the Nunavut Electoral Boundary Commission. This group was responsible for drawing the very first election maps and boundaries for the new territory. This was an important step in setting up Nunavut's government.

Special Investigations

On November 12, 2004, he was appointed to a special Board of Investigation by Correctional Services Canada. This board was asked to look into a serious situation involving a person who had been released from prison and a parole officer in Yellowknife. His role was to help investigate the circumstances of this difficult event.

Business and Tourism

Titus Allooloo also became a part-owner of a tourism company called Narwhal Adventure Training and Tours. This company is located in Yellowknife.
