Exploring Tixkokob's Past
Early History of Tixkokob
Before the Spanish arrived in Yucatán, the area where Tixkokob is now was part of a region called Ceh-Pech. This was a powerful group of people. We don't know exactly when Tixkokob was first settled. The earliest mention of the town is from the year 1549.
Tixkokob's Changing Status
Over time, Tixkokob's official status changed.
- In 1867, the government of Yucatán decided Tixkokob should be called a "town."
- Later, in 1914, it was given the higher status of a "city."
- However, this change didn't last long. Just a few months later, the decision was reversed. Tixkokob went back to being known as a "town."
- Since 1918, Tixkokob has been the main town for its local government area, known as the municipal seat.
