Tjirrkarli is an Aboriginal community in Western Australia. It is located in the Goldfields–Esperance region. This community is part of the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku.

History of Tjirrkarli

The Tjirrkarli community started in the 1980s. It was built near a special well dug by Shell Oil. Shell Oil was looking for oil in the area. They created many straight paths called "seismic lines." Today, some of these paths are used as main roads for the community. Others are used by people for hunting.

Native Title Rights

Tjirrkarli is on land where the Ngaanyatjarra people have Native Title. This means they have special rights to their traditional lands. These rights were recognized under the Native Title Act 1993. This law helps protect the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to their land.

How Tjirrkarli is Governed

The community of Tjirrkarli is run by its own group. This group is called Tjirrkarli (Aboriginal Corporation). It was officially formed on March 24, 1987. This organization helps manage the community. It operates under a law called the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976.

Community Planning

Tjirrkarli has a special plan for its growth and development. This plan is called Tjirrkarli Layout Plan No.1. It follows rules set by the State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements. The community approved this plan on December 3, 2003. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on June 29, 2004. You can find more details about this plan on the Planning Western Australia website.
