Where Does the Toba River Start and Flow?
The Toba River begins high up in the Coast Mountains. It flows generally towards the southwest, starting from the Toba Glacier. The river eventually reaches the very end of Toba Inlet, which is a long, narrow arm of the sea.
The Toba Montrose Energy Project
In 2004, work started on a special energy project on the East Toba River. This project is a "run-of-river" type, which means it uses the natural flow of the river to create electricity without building a large dam. It can produce 235 megawatts of power.
Who Built and Runs the Project?
The Toba Montrose project cost about $660 million. It was funded by a group of lenders, with Manulife Financial Canada leading the way. The main companies involved in the project are Plutonic Power Corporation and GE Energy. Together, they formed the Toba Montrose General Partnership.
Working with First Nations
The building of this project was managed by the Kiewit Corporation. They worked closely with the Sliammon and K'ómoks First Nation. These First Nations groups have traditional territories in the area. The project began operating in August 2010.
Alterra Power Corporation
In 2011, two companies, Magma Energy and Plutonic Power, joined together. They created a new company called Alterra Power Corporation. This new company now manages the Toba Montrose Project.
