Tofutti Brands Inc. is a company from Cranford, New Jersey, in the United States. They make many foods that are free from dairy products. These foods are made from soy and are sold under the "Tofutti" brand. Tofutti was started by David Mintz. Their products are good for people who cannot eat dairy, like those with lactose intolerance or food allergies. They also make foods for people who follow vegetarian or vegan diets. All Tofutti products are also kosher parve, which means they can be eaten with both meat and dairy meals in Jewish dietary laws.
How Tofutti Started
David Mintz owned catering businesses in New York in the 1970s. He wanted to make ice cream without dairy for his Orthodox Jewish customers. This was because Jewish dietary laws (kosher laws) say you cannot eat dairy and meat together.
So, David Mintz decided to try making non-dairy ice cream from tofu. He worked on it for nine years, trying different recipes. Finally, in 1981, he introduced Tofutti products. David Mintz passed away in 2021.
Tofutti Products
Tofutti makes many different foods that are dairy-free. They have an ice cream substitute, which is a frozen dessert that tastes like ice cream but is made from soy.
They also make soy-based versions of other dairy foods. These include sour cream, cream cheese, sliced cheese, and ricotta cheese. One of their popular frozen desserts is called "Tofutti Cuties." These are like ice cream sandwiches, but they are dairy-free. All Tofutti products are suitable for vegans.
