Tollette is a small town in southern Howard County, Arkansas, United States. In 2020, about 185 people lived there. This was a decrease from 240 people in 2010.
History of Tollette
Tollette was started in the 1800s by Sanford Tollette and his wife, Caldonia Crofton Tollette. They were an African American couple. They helped build a church, a store, and a public school in the town. Caldonia Tollette even worked as the postmistress for the United States Post Office in 1893.
Their daughter, Mattye Tollette Bond, started teaching when she was just fifteen years old. She later moved to Brownsville, Tennessee, with her husband, Ollie Seahorn Bond. There, they helped create the first local chapter of the NAACP in 1939. The NAACP is an important organization that works for the rights of African Americans.
Sanford and Caldonia's granddaughter, Mildred Bond Roxborough, also worked for the NAACP. She started helping the organization in Tennessee when she was only nine years old in 1935. She continued her work in New York from 1954 to 1997. She rose to important leadership roles, including Director of Operations.
Where is Tollette?
Tollette is located in the southern part of Howard County. Arkansas Highway 355 goes right through the town. If you go north on this highway for about 4 miles (6.4 km), you will reach Mineral Springs. If you travel south for about 17 miles (27 km), you will get to Fulton and Interstate 30.
The United States Census Bureau says that Tollette covers an area of about 0.96 square miles (2.5 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no water.
