Tomás Berreta Gandolfo (born November 22, 1875 – died August 2, 1947) was an important political leader in Uruguay. He served as the 29th President of Uruguay for a short time in 1947.

Early Life and Political Start
Tomás Berreta was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He became involved in politics at a young age. From 1896, he was an active member of the Colorado Party. This party was very powerful in Uruguay for many years.
Berreta worked in local government for a long time. In the early 1900s, he was the Intendent (like a mayor or governor) of the Canelones area. This experience helped him understand how the country worked.
Rising Through the Ranks
As he grew older, Berreta took on more important roles. In 1943, he became the President of the Senate of Uruguay. The Senate is a part of the country's government that makes laws.
Later, he worked in the government of President Juan José de Amézaga. Berreta was known as an experienced and respected member of the Colorado Party. Because of his long history in politics, he was chosen to run for president. He aimed to take over from President Amézaga.
Becoming President
Tomás Berreta became the President of Uruguay on March 1, 1947. He was 71 years old when he took office.
Important Actions as President
Even though his time as president was short, Berreta made some important decisions. He was a military man for much of his life. He helped create the Liceo Militar General Artigas in Montevideo. This was a new high school in the capital city that would be run like a military academy.
During his presidency, Berreta also traveled to the United States. He met with the US President, Harry S. Truman, in Washington, DC. This was an important meeting for Uruguay's relationship with the United States.
His Time as President Ends
President Berreta's time in office was very brief. He passed away on August 2, 1947, just five months after becoming president. He was 72 years old.
When a president cannot finish their term, the Vice President of Uruguay takes over. Luis Batlle Berres was the Vice President during Berreta's presidency. So, after Berreta's death, Luis Batlle Berres became the new President of Uruguay.
