Tomás Roseingrave (born 4 July 1918 – died 21 August 1993) was an important Irish expert who studied how society works. He was known as a social scientist.

Early Life and Education

Tomás Roseingrave was born in 1918 in a place called Gort in County Galway, Ireland. His father, Thomas, was an engineer. Tomás went to school in Dublin at the O'Brien Institute from 1928 to 1934. After school, he worked for a few different companies.

In the early 1960s, he went to University College Dublin. There, he earned a Master's Degree in social science. This means he studied how people live, work, and interact in groups. He later became a senior researcher at the university.

Working for Ireland

In 1967, Tomás Roseingrave started working for the Irish government. He became the director of "manpower studies" in the Department of Labour. This job involved looking at how many people were available for work and what skills they had. He wrote important reports about how different parts of Ireland could grow and develop. For example, he wrote about jobs and industries in the city of Waterford.

He was also a member of an organization called Muintir na Tíre. In 1968, he became its national director. His reports for this group were very helpful to the government. They helped leaders understand and solve problems in rural areas of Ireland during the 1970s.

Work in Europe and Public Role

When Ireland joined the EEC (which is now the European Union) in 1973, Tomás Roseingrave became a member of its Economic and Social Committee. He worked there until he passed away. In this role, he was often a "rapporteur." This means he was chosen to write official reports and opinions on new topics, especially about community life and technology in Europe.

His hard work was recognized with a gold medal in 1982. Five years later, he received another special honor. Tomás Roseingrave also became well-known to the public through his work on RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster. He was on a TV show called Home Truth and had a weekly radio show. Because of this, many people saw him as the public face of social science in Ireland.

Hobbies and Family Life

Tomás Roseingrave loved the Irish language and was a member of the Gaelic League, which promotes it. He was also part of the Gaelic Athletic Association, which organizes Irish sports.

On 21 August 1945, Tomás married Ellen Goulding. They had two sons and four daughters. They lived in Dundrum, a suburb of Dublin. His daughter, Siobhan Roseingrave, later became involved in politics.

Tomás Roseingrave passed away in August 1993 in Dublin.
