Thomas Jerome Hawkins (born December 22, 1936 – died August 16, 2017) was an American professional basketball player. He was known as "Tom" to his friends and fans.
Tom Hawkins was a tall forward at 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 meters). He became a basketball star at Parker High School in Chicago. After high school, he played for the University of Notre Dame. He was the first African-American basketball star at Notre Dame.
In 1959, Tom was chosen by the Minneapolis Lakers in the first round of the 1959 NBA draft. He played for ten years in the NBA. During his career, he played for the Lakers (who later moved to Los Angeles) and the Cincinnati Royals. He scored 6,672 points and grabbed 4,607 rebounds in his career.
After his basketball career, Tom Hawkins worked in radio and television. He was a broadcaster in Los Angeles. He also became the vice president of communications for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team.
Tom Hawkins passed away at his home in Malibu, California on August 16, 2017.
