Tomas Ledin's Music Journey
Early Career and Hits
Tomas Ledin began his music career in 1972. His first song, "Då ska jag spela," became a big hit. Many other successful songs followed in the 1970s. These included "Blå, blå känslor" (1973), "Knivhuggarrock" (1975), "Festen har börjat" (1976), and "I natt är jag din" (1977).
In the early 1970s, Tomas was inspired by hippie culture. He also spoke out against the Vietnam War. In 1975, he acted in a Swedish play of the musical Godspell. He also performed in 140 concerts across Sweden in 1977.
Working with ABBA
In 1979, Benny Andersson from the famous group ABBA offered Tomas a chance to record music. This was for ABBA's own company, Polar Music. Tomas then joined ABBA on their 1979–1980 tour. He sang as a backing vocalist for the group. He also got to sing his own song, "Not Bad at All," during the shows. Tomas Ledin also appeared on the ABBA Live DVD and the Super Trouper Video.
Eurovision and International Songs
In 1980, Tomas won the Swedish music contest Melodifestivalen. This meant he got to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest that year. He sang his song "Just nu!". This song became very popular in Scandinavia. It was also a big hit in Greece and Portugal. This happened because Tomas recorded an English version called "Right Now!".
In 1982, he released a duet called "Never Again". He sang this song with Agnetha Fältskog, who was also from ABBA. The Spanish version, "Ya nunca más," reached number one in Chile. It was also popular in many parts of Europe.
Tomas also wrote songs for other ABBA members. He wrote "Take Good Care of Your Children" for Agnetha Fältskog. She released it in 1983 on her album Wrap Your Arms Around Me. Another song he wrote, "I Got Something," was released by Anni-Frid Lyngstad on her album Something's Going On.
A Break and a Big Comeback
During the 1980s, Tomas Ledin was very successful in Scandinavia. However, his music did not become as famous in other countries. He did tour Germany and the Netherlands in 1982. The next year, he performed for 60,000 people at the Olympic stadium in Berlin. He was part of a show with other international artists.
In 1984, Tomas decided to take a break from performing. He started working as a producer for Record Station. This was his wife's record company. He helped other singers get started. He successfully produced music for artists like Pugh Rogefeldt and Magnus Uggla. In 1985, he helped organize a concert for ANC (African National Congress). Many Swedish artists performed at this event.
Three years later, Tomas started writing songs again. He wrote songs in English for an album called Down on the Pleasure Avenue. This album was not very successful. Tomas was disappointed, but he started writing music again, this time in Swedish. He became very successful again in 1990. He released a collection of his songs and a new album called Tillfälligheternas spel. Since then, he has been one of the best-selling artists in Sweden.
Latest Successes
In 2000, his collection album Festen har börjat sold 260,000 copies in Sweden. This earned him three platinum records! In 2002, he went on a very big tour across Scandinavia. He performed 27 shows in Sweden and 8 shows in other Nordic countries. More than 250,000 people came to see his shows.
In 2019, a musical film called En del av mitt hjärta (meaning "A Piece of My Heart") was released. This movie used many of Tomas Ledin's songs. It was directed by Edward af Sillén, who Tomas had worked with before.
