A Look at Tomas Ledin's Music Career
Tomas Ledin started his music journey in 1972. His very first song, "Då ska jag spela", became a big hit. Many other popular songs followed in the 1970s. These included "Blå, blå känslor" from 1973 and "I natt är jag din" from 1977. In the early 1970s, Ledin was part of the hippie fashion trend. He also performed in a Swedish stage show of the musical Godspell in 1975. In 1977, he played 140 concerts in Swedish folkparks, which are outdoor venues.
Working with ABBA
In 1979, Benny Andersson from the famous group ABBA invited Tomas Ledin to join their record company, Polar Music. Ledin went on ABBA's 1979–1980 tour. He sang as a backing vocalist for the group. He also got to perform his own song, "Not Bad at All," during their shows. You can see Tomas Ledin on the ABBA Live DVD and the Super Trouper Video.
In 1980, Tomas Ledin won the Swedish music competition Melodifestivalen. This meant he got to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest that year. His song was called "Just nu!". It became very popular in Scandinavia. It was also a hit in Greece and Portugal because Ledin recorded an English version called "Right Now!".
In 1982, he released a duet called "Never Again". He sang this song with Agnetha Fältskog, who was also from ABBA. The Spanish version of the song, "Ya nunca más", reached number one in Chile. It was also popular across Europe. Ledin also wrote songs for other ABBA members. He composed "Take Good Care of Your Children" for Agnetha Fältskog. He also wrote "I Got Something" for Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
Taking a Break and Coming Back
Tomas Ledin was very successful in Scandinavia during the 1980s. However, his music did not become as popular in other countries. He still toured Germany and the Netherlands in 1982. The next year, he performed for 60,000 people in Berlin. In 1984, he decided to take a break from performing. He started working as a producer for his wife's record company, Record Station. He helped other singers become successful.
Three years later, Tomas Ledin started writing songs again. He released an album called Down on the Pleasure Avenue. This album was not very successful. Ledin was disappointed, but he kept writing. This time, he wrote songs in Swedish. He found success again in 1990 with a new album, Tillfälligheternas spel. Since then, he has been one of the best-selling artists in Sweden.
In 2000, his album Festen har börjat (samlingsalbum) sold 260,000 copies in Sweden. This earned him three platinum records. In 2002, he went on a very large tour across Scandinavia. He performed 27 shows in Sweden and 8 shows in other Nordic countries. More than 250,000 people came to see his shows.
Ledin's songs were even turned into a movie musical. The film is called En del av mitt hjärta (which means "A Piece of My Heart"). It was released in 2019.
