Sandviken is a town in Sweden. It's the main town of Sandviken Municipality in Gävleborg County. In 2023, about 26,438 people lived here.
The town is located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of Gävle. It's also around 190 kilometers (118 miles) north of Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. You can travel to Stockholm by train in about 1.5 hours. The main international airport, Arlanda, is about an hour away by train.
Sandviken is known as the home of Sandvik, a big Swedish engineering company. The company's main office was in Sandviken until 2012, when it moved to Stockholm.

Sandviken has many fun cultural activities for everyone.
Learn and Enjoy Arts
The Kulturskolan, or "culture school," offers classes in music, dance, and drama. Sandviken also has its own Big Band and a Symphonic Orchestra. Many talented musicians come from this area.
Art and Exhibitions
The Sandvikens Art Gallery always has interesting art shows throughout the year. You can see different types of art there.
Explore Old Villages
You can visit the old industrial villages of Gysinge and Högbo Bruk. These places have been carefully restored. You can see old forges and smithies, where metal was shaped. There are also handicraft shops and beautiful manor houses. These villages are great for outdoor activities too.
Winter Sports at Kungsberget
During winter, many people visit Kungsberget. It has great slopes for downhill skiing and a fun Snowpark.
Curling Championships
Sandviken hosted the 2023 Women's World Curling Championship. It was the first time a Swedish city hosted this event since Gävle in 2004.
History of Sandviken
Sandviken was started in 1862. This happened when the Sandvik AB ironworks factory was built. By 1900, Sandviken was one of the three biggest ironworks in Sweden. Around 2,000 people worked there at that time.

Bandy Success
The local team, Sandvikens AIK, has won the Swedish bandy championship many times. Bandy is a sport similar to ice hockey, played with a ball. Since 2009, they play their games indoors at Göransson Arena. This arena also hosted the 2017 Bandy World Championship. In 2017, Sandvikens AIK won the Bandy World Cup at home for the first time.
Football Teams
Sandviken has two main football clubs. Sandvikens IF plays in Division 1 Norra. Sandvikens AIK FK plays in Division 3 Södra Norrland. Their stadium, Jernvallen, was used for the 1958 FIFA World Cup. This made Sandviken the northernmost city to host the tournament.
Famous Athletes
Two famous athletes were born in Sandviken. One is the footballer Kim Källström. The other is alpine ski racer Sara Hector.
Getting Around Sandviken
Sandviken has good ways to travel, both by bus and by road.
Bus Travel
There are several bus lines in Sandviken. The main ones are bus 11 (Säljan), bus 13 (Vallhov-Norrsätra), and bus 14 (Björksätra). Most buses run every half hour on weekdays. On holidays and weekends, they run every hour. Bus 11 always runs every hour.
Roads and Highways
Sandviken used to be connected to Gävle by Route 80. Now, the European route E16 connects them. Route 68 connects Sandviken to the city of Örebro and Gävle. Route 272, also called "Högbovägen," links Sandviken to the smaller village of Högbo. This road goes south from the city and crosses Storsjön lake on a causeway.
Air Travel
The Sandviken airport helps people travel by air. Even though it's closer to the town of Valbo, it serves the needs of Sandviken and nearby Gävle.
