Mr. Tanabe became the oldest man in Japan in 2006. Later, in 2007, he became the oldest man in the entire world. He was known as a supercentenarian, which is someone who lives to be 110 years old or more.

Life Story of Tomoji Tanabe

Tomoji Tanabe was born in Miyakonojo, Miyazaki, a city in Japan. He worked for the city as a civil engineer, which means he helped design and build things like roads and bridges. He also worked as a land surveyor, measuring land.

Secrets to a Long Life

Many people wondered how Mr. Tanabe lived for so long. He often shared his secrets. He believed that living a long life came from eating healthy foods, especially vegetables, and drinking milk every day. He also said he avoided unhealthy habits.

On his 112th birthday, he told everyone, "I want to live forever. I don't want to die." The mayor of his city gave him money and flowers to celebrate. He was described as "extremely healthy" for his age.

Celebrating Birthdays

When he turned 113, Mr. Tanabe said, "I am happy. I eat a lot. I don't want to die yet." He even said he wanted to "live indefinitely," meaning forever. For his birthday, he received a special tea cup with his name on it. He also got more gifts, flowers, and money from the mayor.

A city official mentioned that his favorite food was fried shrimp. However, he had started eating less oily food to stay healthy. He hoped to live for another 10 years.

His Final Years

After his last birthday, Mr. Tanabe's health began to get worse. By May 2009, he was mostly in bed because of a heart condition. He found it hard to eat.

On June 19, 2009, Tomoji Tanabe passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in southern Japan. He was 113 years and 274 days old. After his death, another very old man, Henry Allingham from Britain, became the world's oldest living man.

Mr. Tanabe left behind a large family. He had eight children, 25 grandchildren, and 54 great-grandchildren.
