Tomoyasu Ando (安藤 智安, Andō Tomoyasu, born May 23, 1974) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a goalkeeper for several teams in Japan, including Urawa Reds and Omiya Ardija. Ando spent many years playing in Japan's top football leagues, the J1 League and J2 League.

Football Career Highlights

Tomoyasu Ando was born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, on May 23, 1974. After finishing his studies at Komazawa University, he started his professional football journey.

Starting with Urawa Reds

In 1997, Ando joined Urawa Reds, a team in the J1 League, which is Japan's top football division. Later that year, in September, he moved to Avispa Fukuoka on a temporary loan. During his time there, he played in many matches, gaining valuable experience as a goalkeeper.

Returning to Urawa Reds

Ando returned to Urawa Reds in 1998. For a few years, it was tough for him to get much playing time. Other experienced goalkeepers like Yuki Takita and Hisashi Tsuchida were often chosen to play instead. Even after Takita and Tsuchida retired in 2001, Ando still faced strong competition. Younger goalkeepers, such as Yohei Nishibe and Norihiro Yamagishi, were also trying for the starting spot.

Moving to Omiya Ardija

In July 2002, Ando made a big move to Omiya Ardija. This team was in the J2 League, the second-highest football division in Japan. At Omiya Ardija, he competed with other talented goalkeepers like Eiji Kawashima and Hiroki Aratani. He managed to play in many games for the club.

Promotion to J1 League

Ando's time at Omiya Ardija was successful. In 2004, his team finished in second place in the J2 League. This great performance meant that Omiya Ardija was promoted to the J1 League for the 2005 season! It was an exciting achievement for the club and its players.

End of Career

From 2005 onwards, it became harder for Ando to play regularly, as Hiroki Aratani often took the main goalkeeper position. Tomoyasu Ando decided to retire from professional football at the end of the 2006 season. Throughout his career, he played a total of 73 league matches.
