The Story of Tomyski Hops
Growing hops in the Nowy Tomyśl area started a long time ago. This was in the late 1600s and through the 1700s. But at first, it was not very successful.
A New Type of Hop is Created
In the late 1830s, a German economist named Joseph Jacob Flatau helped change things. He created a new kind of hop plant in the area. This new plant was a mix of hops from Bavaria and Bohemia.
This new hop, called Nowotomyski, became very popular. Many people wanted to buy it.
Growing and Selling Hops
By the 1880s, farmers were growing a lot of Nowotomyski hops. They produced about 50,000 to 60,000 cwt each year. These hops were sent to many places. They went to Bohemia, Szczecin, Gdańsk, and countries like Scandinavia, France, England, and Switzerland.
Growing these hops helped the area a lot. It used to be one of the poorest places. But hop farming brought money and jobs.
Challenges for Hop Farmers
However, hop production started to slow down in the 1890s. This continued until the end of World War I. Between World War I and World War II, the amount of hops grown went up and down.
During World War II, Poland was occupied by Germany. Sadly, almost all the hop farms in the region were destroyed. About 98% of the growing area was lost.
Traditional Use
Today, Tomyski hops are still known for their special qualities. They are traditionally used to make a type of beer called Grodziskie.
