Who Was Tomás José González Carvajal?

Early Life and Learning

Tomás José González Carvajal was born in Seville in 1753. He went to the University of Seville to study. Later, he earned a law degree in Madrid.

He started working for the government in the finance department. In 1795, he became a leader for new settlements. These settlements were being built in areas called Sierra Morena and Andalusia.

A Time of Change: War and Imprisonment

During the Peninsular War, from 1809 to 1811, he worked for the Spanish army. In 1812, he became the director of the University of San Isidro.

However, he upset the government. He started a new course about international law, which is about rules between countries. Because of this, he was put in prison for five years, from 1815 to 1820.

Later, a new government called the Trienio Liberal set him free. But when that government ended, he had to leave Spain. After four years, he was allowed to come back home. He passed away in 1834. At that time, he was a member of the supreme council of war, a high-level group that advised on military matters.

A Famous Writer

González Carvajal was well-known across Europe for his writing. He translated parts of the Bible into poetry. To do this, he started learning the Hebrew language when he was 54 years old!

He also wrote other poems and prose works. He looked up to another famous Spanish writer, Luis Ponce de León, as his role model.
