Playing Gaelic Football
Before becoming a manager, Tomás Ó Flatharta was a talented Gaelic football player. He played for his local club, An Ghaeltacht. Later, he joined Dublin GAA club Kilmacud Crokes. With Kilmacud Crokes, he was part of the team that won the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship in 1995.

Managing Westmeath Team
Ó Flatharta became the manager of the Westmeath team in 2005. He took over from another famous manager, Páidí Ó Sé. He worked with Westmeath until July 2009. He decided to step down after Westmeath lost a match to their neighbours, Meath. Before becoming manager, Ó Flatharta was a banker in Dublin. He had also been a team trainer and selector for Westmeath for two years.
Managing Galway Team
In October 2010, Ó Flatharta was chosen as the new manager for the Galway team. He replaced Joe Kernan. However, his time with Galway was short. In August 2011, the Galway County Board decided to end his role. This decision came after Galway was moved down to Division 2 in the National Football League. They also did not win any championship matches that season.
Managing Laois Team
After Justin McNulty left his role, Tomás Ó Flatharta was a top choice for the vacant manager position for the Laois team. In October 2013, it was confirmed that Ó Flatharta would be the new Laois manager. He managed the team until July 2015. He stepped down after Laois had a surprising loss against Antrim.
