Antonio Cantó García del Moral was born in Valencia, Spain, on January 14, 1965. His father was a doctor. Before becoming famous, he worked as a model. He studied acting at the Centro Dramático Nacional. In 1986, he started working as a TV presenter. His first job was on the show La tarde on La 1.
Acting Career Highlights
Toni Cantó started his film career in 1986. His first movie was Oficio de muchachos. He appeared in several other films. These included Your Name Poisons My Dreams (1996) and All About My Mother (1999). He also acted in many TV series during the 1990s. Some of these were El destino en sus manos and Querido maestro.
His most well-known role was David Pérez. He played this character in the popular TV show 7 vidas. This role made him very famous in Spain. In December 2020, he participated in Mask Singer. He finished in third place on the first season of the show.
In September 2022, Cantó became a creative director. He worked for the television channel 7NN. The channel stopped broadcasting in March 2023. This happened because it did not have enough money to continue.
Time in Politics
Toni Cantó joined the Ciudadanos political party in 2006. He ran in local elections in 2007. He was a candidate for a local group called Vecinos por Torrelodones. Later, in 2008, he joined another party. This party was called Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD).
In 2011, he led the UPyD list in Valencia. He won a seat in the Spanish Congress. This was during the 2011 Spanish general election. In 2014, he was chosen to run for a higher position. He was to be the UPyD candidate for President of the Valencian Government. This was for the 2015 Valencian parliamentary election.
However, he resigned from Congress in April 2015. He also decided not to run for President. He said he would think about staying with UPyD. This decision would come after the party's meeting in June 2015.
Cantó had been critical of UPyD's leader, Rosa Díez. After poor election results, Díez resigned. Cantó supported Irene Lozano in the next leadership election. But Lozano lost. Four days later, Cantó announced he would become an independent politician. He then joined the Citizens party. He was chosen as the second candidate on their list. He was elected to Congress in the 2015 Spanish general election.
He ran as the Citizens party candidate in the 2019 Valencian regional election. He was elected to the Corts Valencianes. There, he became the leader of his group. He was known for his speeches, some of which became very popular online. He even hired a cyberactivist to help him connect with more people.
During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked with the Valencian government. But he soon returned to opposing them strongly. He left the Citizens party and his seat in March 2021. This happened after some political events in another region.
A few days later, in March 2021, another party announced he would join them. This was the People's Party. He was to be on their list for the 2021 Madrilenian regional election. However, there were questions about his eligibility. This was because he had been registered in a different region. A court later ruled that he could not be on the list. This was because he had not registered in Madrid in time.
In 2021, Cantó joined a school in Madrid called ISSEP. This school was founded by Marion Maréchal. He teaches speaking skills there.
