Tonia Couch (born 20 May 1989) is a former British Olympic diver. She competed for Great Britain in many major diving events. Tonia was known for her strong performances on the 10-meter platform.

Tonia's Early Diving Career

Tonia Couch was born in Plymouth, England. Before diving, she was a talented gymnast. In September 1999, she tried diving for the first time. Just four weeks later, she won her very first competition in London.

In February 2002, Tonia made history. She became the youngest girl to join the Junior Olympic Programme. This happened after she won a bronze medal at the British Championships. It was clear then that she had a special talent for platform diving.

Competing on the World Stage

Tonia started competing in big international events early on. She took part in the 2005 and 2007 World Championships. In both events, she finished 25th in the 10-meter platform.

In 2008, Tonia competed in the Olympics. She finished eighth, which was the best result for a British female diver in 20 years. She repeated this eighth-place finish at the World Championships in 2009. These results showed her strong place in British diving history.

Partnerships and Medals

Tonia continued to compete at the highest level. She participated in the 2009 World Championships in Rome. In 2010, she went to her second Commonwealth Games in Delhi. There, she teamed up with Sarah Barrow for the 10-meter synchro event, finishing fourth.

Success with Sarah Barrow

In 2011, Tonia reached the World final again in the 10-meter platform, finishing ninth. Her partnership with Sarah Barrow continued to grow. They finished fourth together in the synchro event that year.

The year 2012 was very successful for Tonia and Sarah. They won a gold medal at the European Championships. They also earned a bronze medal at the World Cup. Later that year, they competed at the London 2012 Olympics in front of a home crowd. They finished in an impressive fifth place.

In 2013, Tonia won the British 10-meter platform title again. She also competed in her fifth World Championships. She finished ninth in the 10-meter platform and fifth with Sarah Barrow in the 10-meter synchro.

Commonwealth Games Silver

In 2014, Tonia finished fourth at the World Cup in Shanghai. She then teamed up with Sarah Barrow again. They won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This was a big achievement for the pair.

In March 2015, Tonia earned a bronze medal in the 10-meter platform at the World Series in Dubai. She went on to win the overall title of Diving World Series champion for the 10-meter platform. This was thanks to winning four bronze medals in the series. She and Sarah Barrow also won two bronzes and a silver in the synchro event. Tonia competed at the World Championships in Kazan. She finished eighth in the 10-meter platform and sixth with Sarah Barrow in the 10-meter synchro. These results helped Great Britain secure a spot at the 2016 Olympics.

Olympic Appearances and Retirement

In 2016, Tonia continued her strong diving performances. At the Diving World Series in Kazan, she won a silver medal. Her best dive scored 81.60 points.

Rio Olympics 2016

At the Rio Olympics, Tonia teamed up with Lois Toulson. They finished fifth in the synchronized 10-meter platform event. Tonia also competed in the individual 10-meter platform. She reached the finals and finished in 12th place.

In 2017, Tonia and Lois Toulson continued to compete together. They finished fifth in several Diving World Series events. Tonia also qualified for the World Championships with Lois Toulson.

After a successful career, Tonia Couch retired from diving. She received a special award at the British Diving Championships in January 2018. Since then, she has worked as a diving expert for the BBC. She helped cover the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
