Tony Atencio's birth name was Antonio Atencio. He was born into a family of artists. His mother, Isabel M. Montoya, was also a painter. She was a cousin of the famous potter Maria Martinez.

Tony had several siblings who were also artists. His brothers, Gilbert Benjamin Atencio and Pat Atencio, were painters too. His sisters, Helen Gutierrez and Angelita Sanchez, also created art.

Tony Atencio went to the Santa Fe Indian School. This school helped many Native American artists develop their skills. It was a place where he could learn and grow as a painter.

Military Service and Legacy

Before focusing fully on his art, Tony Atencio served his country. He spent fifteen years in the United States Navy. After his time in the Navy, he continued to create his unique paintings.
