Tony Dumas, born on August 25, 1972, is an American who used to play professional basketball. He was known as a Shooting guard and played for teams like the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA.

College Basketball Career

Tony Dumas was born in Chicago, Illinois. He played college basketball at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). Their sports teams are now called the Kansas City Roos.

Tony became the top scorer in UMKC history. He scored an amazing 2,459 points during his college career. In his last year, he was one of the best scorers in the NCAA. He averaged 27.0 points per game, ranking seventh nationally.

He is also the only player from Kansas City to be chosen in the NBA draft. Tony was the first player from the Dallas Mavericks to join the NBA All-Star Weekend's Dunk-Championship. He finished in 6th place in that contest.

Years later, in May 2021, Tony went back to UMKC. He earned his bachelor's degree in Science. He also studied Communication. Tony received a special scholarship from UMKC. He is now working on his master's degree in Business Administration (MBA). Tony Dumas is also a loving father to his son, Tony George Dumas.

Professional Basketball Career

Tony Dumas played professional basketball for several years. He started his career in the NBA. Later, he played for teams in other leagues and countries.

Playing for the Dallas Mavericks (1994–1996)

The Dallas Mavericks picked Tony Dumas in the first round of the 1994 NBA draft. He was the 19th player chosen overall. He played most of his four NBA seasons with the Mavericks.

His best year was the 1995–96 season. He played in 67 games for the Mavericks. He averaged 11.6 points per game. In one game against the Phoenix Suns, he scored 39 points.

In 1995, Tony took part in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. He finished last (6th place) after not completing his dunks in the first round. After his strong 1995–1996 season, his performance changed. He found it hard to play as well as before. The most points he averaged after that was 3.6 per game. However, he did score 15 points in a game against the Detroit Pistons in the 1996–1997 season.

Playing for the Phoenix Suns (1996–1997)

On December 26, 1996, Tony Dumas was traded from the Dallas Mavericks. He went to the Phoenix Suns with Jason Kidd and Loren Meyer. In return, the Mavericks received Sam Cassell, Michael Finley, and A.C. Green.

Tony was part of the 1996–1997 Suns team. This team made it to the playoffs. Tony played only 6 games that season because of an injury. The Suns won 40 games and faced the Seattle SuperSonics in the first round of the playoffs. Even though the SuperSonics were a strong team, the Suns played well. They pushed the series to 5 games before losing. Tony did not get much playing time in the playoffs.

Playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers (1997–1998)

On October 1, 1997, Tony Dumas was part of a big trade. He was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Cleveland Cavaliers with Wesley Person.

With the Cavaliers, Tony played only 7 games. He averaged 2.0 points per game. He also played only about 6.7 minutes per game. On January 29, 1998, the Cavaliers decided to let Tony go.

After the NBA

Tony Dumas left the NBA soon after the Cleveland Cavaliers released him. He continued to play basketball in other leagues.

  • In 1998, he played for the La Crosse Bobcats in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA).
  • In 1999, he moved to Greece and played for Sporting Athens.
  • In 2001, he played for Rimini in Italy.
