In 1942, during World War II, the Navy took over the site. It became the Naval Air Station Memphis. Its main job was to train Navy pilots and maintain aircraft. After World War II, pilot training stopped. However, the base continued to train Navy and Marine Corps aviation specialists.

In 1993, many training schools moved from Millington to Florida. At the same time, the BUPERS group moved to Millington. The airfield became the Millington Regional Jetport and was given to the city. In 1998, the base was renamed Naval Support Activity Mid-South to show its new role.
