Tony's Amazing Canoe Career

Tony Estanguet was a top athlete in canoe slalom for many years. He competed at the highest level from 1994 until he retired in 2012.

Olympic Gold Medals

Tony won three gold medals at the Summer Olympics in the C1 event. This means he was the best in the world in his canoe.

  • He won his first gold medal at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
  • His second gold came at the Athens Olympics in 2004. In Athens, he won after a close call where another competitor received a penalty.
  • His third gold medal was at the London Olympics in 2012. This made him the first French athlete to win three gold medals in the same sport at the Olympics!

Tony was also chosen to be the flag-bearer for France at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. This is a huge honor, as it means he led his country's team into the stadium.

World and European Championships

Besides his Olympic success, Tony also won many medals at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. He earned five gold medals, six silver medals, and one bronze medal. He won gold in the C1 event in 2006, 2009, and 2010. He also won gold as part of a C1 team in 2005 and 2007.

He was also very successful at the European Canoe Slalom Championships. There, he won four gold medals, three silver medals, and three bronze medals.

Tony was so good that he won the overall World Cup title in C1 in both 2003 and 2004. This means he was the top-ranked canoeist for those years.

Building a Legacy

Tony and his older brother, Patrice, helped create the Pau-Pyrénées Whitewater Stadium in their hometown of Pau. This special place, opened in 2008, is used for whitewater sports like canoe slalom.
