About Tony Ince
Tony Ince was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Before he became a politician, he worked as a counsellor for the Department of Community Services. He also helped coordinate projects for the Black Educators Association.
His Political Journey
Tony Ince first tried to become a politician in 2009 but did not win that election.
Becoming a Member of the House of Assembly
In 2013, Tony Ince was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. This is like the provincial parliament for Nova Scotia. He won against the person who was the Premier (the leader of the province) at the time, Darrell Dexter.
Roles as a Minister
After being elected, Tony Ince was chosen to be part of the Executive Council of Nova Scotia on October 22, 2013. This means he became a "Minister," which is like a leader for certain government departments. He was the Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. He was also the Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs. This role helps support and represent people of African Nova Scotian heritage. He was also responsible for the Heritage Property Act, which protects important historical places.
Ince was re-elected in the 2017 election. On June 15, 2017, the Premier, Stephen McNeil, changed some of the Ministers' jobs. Tony Ince became the Minister of the Public Service Commission. He continued to be the Minister of African Nova Scotian Affairs.
Role in Opposition
By September 2024, Tony Ince was serving as an "Official Opposition critic." This means that even though his party was not in power, he was responsible for watching and commenting on the work of the government in certain areas. He was the critic for the Public Service Commission, Military Relations, and African Nova Scotian Affairs.
Moving to the Senate
In October 2024, Tony Ince announced that he would not run in the next Nova Scotia election. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family.
However, on March 7, 2025, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau chose him to become a Senator for Canada. The Senate is part of Canada's Parliament, and Senators review laws and represent their regions.
