Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Topelius is a fascinating place known as a ghost town in Otter Tail County, Minnesota. A ghost town is a place where most or all people have moved away, leaving behind empty buildings and a quiet history. Topelius was also called by other names like Dopelius, Amboy, or Benton's Crossing in the past.

What is the History of Topelius?

Topelius began its official life with a post office. This post office opened on May 10, 1901. It was first known by the name Dopelius. The community was later renamed Topelius by Heikki Hendrickson (Kantomaa). He chose the name to honor Zachris Topelius, a famous Swedish-language poet and writer. The post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors on January 31, 1916. After the post office closed, people gradually moved away, and Topelius became the quiet ghost town it is today.
