Colin Anthony "Topper" Carew, born on July 16, 1943, is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He is well-known for creating the popular TV series Martin and for directing several movies.

Growing Up

Topper Carew grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, in a neighborhood called Roxbury. He attended the John D. O'Bryant School of Math & Science. He first went to college at Howard University. Later, he transferred to Yale, where he earned two degrees. He has a bachelor's degree in Architecture and a master's degree in Environmental Design. He also holds a doctorate in Communications.

Topper Carew's Career

Topper Carew started his career by making documentary films. These films explored how different neighborhoods and their buildings were connected. In 1966, he founded The New Thing Art and Architecture Center in Boston.

In 1972, he worked at the television station WGBH-TV. Two years later, in 1974, he helped start the Rainbow Television Workshop. This was a non-profit organization he created with his late wife, Alyce S. Carew.

He was also a Community Fellow at MIT. He was a Broadcast Fellow at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. In 2018, he became a faculty fellow at Spelman College's Innovation Lab.

Films and TV Shows

Topper Carew has directed or produced several films. These include D.C. Cab, Breakin’ N’ Enterin’ (1983), and Be Somebody... or Be Somebody's Fool! (1984). He also directed Talkin' ... After Dark (1991).

He is most famous for creating and being the executive producer of the TV series Martin. This show was very popular and ran from 1992 to 1997.

Personal Life

Topper Carew was married to Alyce Sprow Carew. She passed away in 2001 from breast cancer. They had two daughters together, named Cicely and Lena Carew.

Awards and Recognition

Topper Carew has received many honors for his work. He was given the "National Media Hero Award." In 2013, he received the MIT Martin Luther King Leadership Award. He has won more than 40 film and television awards. These include four NAACP Image Awards and a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.
