Total islands 3

The Torch Keys are a group of three small islands located in the lower part of the Florida Keys. These islands are named Little Torch Key, Middle Torch Key, and Big Torch Key. Of the three, Little Torch Key is the most populated. The islands got their name from a special plant called Sea Torchwood (Amyris elemifera). This plant grows in the forests there. Sea Torchwood is great for starting fires, even when its wood is still green! The Torch Keys are found just west of Big Pine Key. They are about 28 miles (45 km) east of Key West.

What Are the Torch Keys?

The Torch Keys are part of a long chain of islands called the Florida Keys. These islands stretch out from the southern tip of Florida. They separate the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. The Torch Keys are known for their natural beauty. They offer a quiet escape from busier areas.

The Three Islands

The Torch Keys include three main islands. Each island has its own unique features.

  • Little Torch Key: This is the most developed island. It has homes and some businesses.
  • Middle Torch Key: This island is less populated. It has more natural areas.
  • Big Torch Key: This is the largest of the three. It is mostly undeveloped. It has many natural habitats.

Why Are They Called "Torch" Keys?

The name "Torch Keys" comes from a specific tree. This tree is called Sea Torchwood. It grows naturally on these islands.

Sea Torchwood: A Special Plant

Sea Torchwood (Amyris elemifera) is a fascinating plant. It is known for its resin-rich wood. This wood burns very easily. It can even light up when it is still green. This made it useful for early settlers. They could use it as kindling to start fires. The plant's ability to burn so well gave the islands their fiery name.

Where Sea Torchwood Grows

Sea Torchwood is found in a type of forest. These forests are called rockland hammocks. They grow on limestone rock. This unique environment supports many special plants. The Florida Keys have many such hammocks.
