Torger Nergård's Curling Journey
Torger Nergård started playing curling professionally in 1987. He is well-known for being the "third" player for Team Thomas Ulsrud. In curling, the third player is usually the vice-skip and helps the skip with strategy.
Early Years and Junior Championships
When he was younger, Torger played as the third for teams led by Thomas Due in the 1991 and 1992 World Junior Curling Championships. He even led his own team as the "skip" in the 1996 World Junior Curling Championships.
Olympic Gold and Team Ulsrud
Torger was an alternate player for Pål Trulsen's team when Norway won the gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. An alternate player is a substitute who can step in if needed. He also won gold with this team at the 2005 European Curling Championships.
With Team Ulsrud, Torger played different positions over the years. He was the lead in 1997, second in 1998, and then mostly the third from 2000 onwards. This team won many events, including six World Curling Tour titles.
Big Wins with Team Ulsrud
Team Ulsrud, with Torger as a key player, won several medals at major championships:
- They earned four medals at the European Curling Championships: silver in 2007 and 2008, and bronze in 2002 and 2009.
- They also won three bronze medals at the World Curling Championships in 2006, 2008, and 2009.
- A big moment was winning the silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Leading the Team at the 2010 World Championship
At the 2010 World Curling Championship in Italy, Torger Nergård stepped up to be the skip. This happened because Thomas Ulsrud had to go home for family reasons. Team Nergård played incredibly well and won the silver medal!
They had some exciting games, like beating Canada's Team Kevin Koe 9-8. This win helped Norway finish first in the early rounds. They also beat Scotland's Team Warwick Smith 9-7 in the semi-final. Torger showed that even without their regular skip, the team could perform at a very high level.
A Special Award
At the end of the 2010 World Championship, Torger Nergård received the Colin Campbell Memorial Award. This award is given to a player who shows great skill, honesty, fair play, friendship, and sportsmanship. It's a big honor because his fellow competitors chose him for it.
After 2010, the team continued to succeed. They won gold medals back-to-back at the European Curling Championships in 2010 and 2011. They also won a silver medal in 2012.
Life Outside Curling
Torger Nergård is married to another curler, Marianne Rørvik. They have two children. When he's not on the ice, Torger works as an engineer for a company called Goodtech Projects and Services.
