Curling is a fun winter sport that has been part of the Winter Olympic Games for a long time! It first appeared at the very first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France. However, the results from that first competition weren't officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee until 2006.
After its first appearance, curling was a "demonstration sport" at the 1932 Games. This means it was shown off, but medals didn't count towards the official medal count. It then took a long break before returning as a demonstration sport in 1988 and 1992. Finally, curling became an official medal sport at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.
For many years, only men's and women's curling teams competed. But in 2018, a new event called mixed doubles was added. This event was first suggested for the 2010 Games, but it wasn't approved until 2015.
Since curling became an official sport in 1998, Canada has been very strong. Their men's teams won gold medals in 2006, 2010, and 2014. They also earned silver medals in 1998 and 2002, and a bronze in 2022. The Canadian women's team won gold in 1998 and 2014, a silver in 2010, and bronze medals in 2002 and 2006. Their mixed doubles team also won gold in 2018.
There's a similar sport called ice stock sport (Eisstockschießen in German). It was a demonstration event in 1936 and 1964. But these events are not considered part of curling's Olympic history.
