Curling is a sport where players slide stones on a sheet of ice towards a target area. It has been part of the Winter Olympic Games for a long time! It first appeared at the very first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France. However, the results from that first competition weren't officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee until 2006.
Curling was also shown as a "demonstration sport" at some Olympics. This means it was played to show people what it was like, but medals weren't officially counted. It was a demonstration sport in 1932, and then again in 1988 and 1992. Finally, curling became an official medal sport at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.
For many years, only men's and women's curling teams competed. But for the 2018 Winter Olympics, a new event called mixed doubles was added. In mixed doubles, teams are made up of one male and one female player.
Since curling became an official sport in 1998, Canada has been very strong. Their men's teams have won many gold and silver medals. The Canadian women's team has also won gold medals, and their mixed doubles team won gold in 2018.

How Curling Joined the Olympics
Curling's journey to becoming a full Olympic sport was quite interesting. It started as an unofficial event in 1924. Then, it was shown as a demonstration sport a few times. This helped more people learn about curling and see how exciting it is. After being a demonstration sport in 1988 and 1992, it was finally voted in as an official medal sport for the 1998 Winter Olympics.
Olympic Curling Events
When curling first became official, there were two main events:
- Men's tournament: Teams made up of men compete for medals.
- Women's tournament: Teams made up of women compete for medals.
Later, a new and exciting event was added:
- Mixed doubles: This event features teams of two players, one man and one woman. They work together to win the gold medal. This event was first played at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
