Torness Nuclear Power Station

Torness nuclear power station is a large building that makes electricity using nuclear power. It was one of the last big nuclear power stations built in the United Kingdom. It uses two special engines called Advanced gas-cooled reactors to create power. Building Torness started in 1980 and finished in 1988.

Where is Torness Power Station?

Torness nuclear power station is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Edinburgh. It is located at Torness Point, near a town called Dunbar, in East Lothian, Scotland. The power station is a very noticeable building in the area. You can easily see it from the main A1 road and the East Coast Main Line railway.

How Does a Nuclear Power Station Work?

A nuclear power station like Torness makes electricity using heat. Inside the special engines, called reactors, tiny atoms are split apart. This process creates a lot of heat. This heat then boils water to make steam. The steam spins large machines called turbines, which are connected to generators. These generators then make electricity that goes to homes and businesses.
