Torquemada is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the province of Palencia in Castile and León, Spain. In 2010, a count of people, known as a census, showed that 1098 people lived there. This town is thought to be the birthplace of a famous historical figure named Tomas de Torquemada.
The village is also well-known for its delicious peppers. Growing peppers is a very important part of the local economy.

The name Torquemada comes from two old Latin words. These words are turris cremata, which means "burnt tower".

Birth of Infanta Catalina
A princess named Infanta Catalina was born here. Her birthday was January 14, 1507. She was the daughter of Queen Juana of Castile and King Felipe of Habsburg. After King Felipe passed away, his body rested in Torquemada for three months.
Home of a Famous Writer
The village is also home to the writer José Zorrilla y Moral. He wrote a very famous play called "Don Juan Tenorio". This play is traditionally performed every year on All Saints Day. There is a special plaque in front of his summer house. It reminds everyone of José Zorrilla and his connection to Torquemada.
The Ruta Quetzal Expedition
In the summer of 2007, a special journey called the "Ruta Quetzal" came through Torquemada. This expedition was held to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Infanta Catalina's birth. It was a way to honor her and the town's history.
