Tortolì is a town located on the beautiful island of Sardinia, which is part of Italy. It is found in the Province of Nuoro. In Italy, a comune is a local area with its own government, similar to a municipality or town.
Where is Tortolì?
Tortolì is located on the eastern coast of Sardinia. It has a port and a very important area called Arbatax. Arbatax also has an airport. This airport used to connect Tortolì to other parts of Italy and Europe.
The town is surrounded by other places. To the north, you'll find Girasole and Lotzorai. To the west are Villagrande Strisaili and Ilbono. Barisardo is located to the south. To the east, Tortolì meets the big blue Mediterranean Sea.
A Look at Tortolì's Past
Ancient Times
People have lived in the Tortolì area for a very long time. Evidence shows that humans were here during the Neolithic period, which was the New Stone Age. Later, different groups visited or settled here. These included the Phoenicians, who were ancient traders. Then came the Romans, followed by the Vandals, and finally the Byzantines.
Between the 10th and 13th centuries, Tortolì was part of the giudicato of Cagliari. A "giudicato" was like an independent kingdom in medieval Sardinia.
During the time when Spain ruled Sardinia, Tortolì became the main town of the County of Quirra. This was an important administrative area.
Modern History
In 1807, Tortolì became the capital of a larger province. This province included 27 different villages. However, in 1921, Tortolì lost its capital status. The town of Lanusei became the new capital instead.
Later, in 1859, Tortolì became part of the Province of Cagliari. Then, in 1926, it was moved again and became part of the province of Nuoro. This is the province it belongs to today.
A sad event happened in 1943 during World War II. The port of Arbatax was bombed. This attack tragically caused the deaths of 13 people.
