The Tortue River South-West (in French: rivière Tortue Sud-Ouest) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Tortue River, which then joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River. This river is located east of the village of L'Islet-sur-Mer.

All About the River

The Tortue River South-West is a short river, only about 10.7 kilometers (6.6 miles) long. It's like a small stream that feeds into a bigger river. This type of river is called a tributary. It flows into the west side of the main Tortue River.

Where Does It Start?

This river begins as an agricultural stream in the area of L'Islet. Its starting point is about 38 meters (125 feet) above sea level. This is where the water first gathers to form the river.

Where Does It End?

The Tortue River South-West finishes its journey when it flows into the Tortue River itself. This meeting point is also in L'Islet, but at a lower elevation of about 18 meters (59 feet) above sea level. From there, the water continues its path towards the Saint Lawrence River.

Nearby Areas

The river flows through the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec. It passes through parts of the L'Islet Regional County Municipality and the Montmagny Regional County Municipality. These areas are known for their beautiful landscapes and farming communities.

What's in a Name?

The name Tortue River South-West comes from the main Tortue River. In French, "tortue" means "turtle." Rivers are often named after animals in French Canadian areas.

Why "Turtle"?

The name "turtle" for a river usually means that the water flows slowly. This happens when the river doesn't drop much in height from its start to its end. A slow current is similar to how a turtle moves.

Official Name

The name Rivière Tortue Sud-Ouest became official on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the group in Quebec responsible for naming places.
