Touch-Tone Terrorists facts for kids
The Touch-Tone Terrorists is a funny series of prank phone calls. These calls were released on CDs. The person behind all the calls is one man named Pete Dzoghi. He is also known by his nickname, "RePete".
What Are The Touch-Tone Terrorists?
Pete Dzoghi bought special 1-800 numbers. These numbers were very similar to real company phone numbers. For example, one number might be just one digit different from the actual phone number for UPS. Other numbers were close to businesses like an oil change shop or an auto insurance claims line. He also had numbers similar to a psychic hotline, a pen maker, a bank, and a department store.
How Did the Pranks Work?
People would often misdial and call Pete's numbers by mistake. They thought they were calling the real company. Pete would then answer the phone. He used special equipment to change his voice. This equipment included a Gentner SPH-3A telephone hybrid and a Yamaha SPX-90 electronic pitch transposer. These tools helped him sound like many different people.
The Characters RePete Created
Pete Dzoghi created many silly and over-the-top characters. He voiced all of these characters himself. When people called, they would talk to these funny characters. The callers believed they were speaking to real customer service agents. This led to many hilarious and confusing conversations. The humor came from the callers' reactions to the strange characters.
