Toussaint Dubois was born on October 8, 1762. His parents were Charles Quintin dit Dubois and Cecile Couvret. He was born in St-Laurent, near Montreal, Quebec.
After the American Revolutionary War, he moved to Vincennes, Indiana. There, he became a fur trader. He was married twice during his life.
His first wife was Jeanne Bonneau. They had four sons and one daughter together. After Jeanne passed away, Toussaint married Jane Baird in 1805. They had three more sons.
Military Service
Toussaint Dubois was a brave soldier. He served as a captain in the Indiana militia. He led a special group called the Company of Spies and Guides.
This company fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. He also served as a Major in the War of 1812. In this war, he commanded a group called the Kentucky Mounted Spies.
Later Life and Legacy
Toussaint Dubois sadly drowned in 1816. He was crossing the Little Wabash River in Illinois. He was returning from a business trip in St. Louis, Missouri. He was buried in Vincennes, Indiana.
His home in Lawrenceville, Illinois, became important later. It served as the main government building for Lawrence County, Illinois when it was formed in 1821.
