Townley started as a town where people mined coal. It officially became a town in 1895. The United States Census counted its population three times after that. In 1920, Townley had its largest population with 1,554 residents. This made it the fourth biggest town in Walker County at that time.
After 1920, the coal mine in Townley closed down. Because of this, the town either gave up its official status or lost it. Since then, Townley has not been listed in the official census records.
