The Story of Toy Gum
Toy chewing gum first started in 1930. It was created by a company called Marabou.
Toy's Popular Years
In the 1960s and 1970s, Toy gum was incredibly popular. People in both Sweden and Norway loved it. Each year, about 600 to 700 tonnes of Toy gum were sold! That's a lot of gum.
Changes and End of Production
Later, another company named Malaco took over making Toy gum. They moved the production to Denmark. In the 1990s, fewer people bought Toy gum. By 1998, the company stopped making it. This was because many new kinds of chewing gum came out. Most of these new gums were sugar-free. Toy tried to make a sugar-free version, but it did not sell well.
A Special Comeback
In 2004, for Toy's 70th birthday, they made a special batch. About 700,000 packs were sold for a short time. Years later, Toy gum became available again regularly.
Famous Slogans and Ads
Toy gum was well-known for its fun advertisements.
Catchy Phrases
In Sweden, Toy gum had a very famous saying: "Ta't lugnt, ta en Toy" This means "Take it easy, have a Toy." Another slogan was "Frisk i mun med Toy" which means "Fresh mouth with Toy."
Star in Commercials
The famous singer Alice Babs appeared in many TV commercials for Toy gum. She would sing a song that said: "Jag känns väl igen från kartongen/och kanske även på sången" This means "You might know me from the pack / and maybe also from my song."
