The Toyota 4Runner is a popular SUV made by the Japanese company Toyota. It's built in factories in Tahara, Japan, and also at the Hino factory. The 4Runner first came out in 1984. It started as a version of the Toyota Hi-Lux truck, sharing many of its parts and engines.
Over the years, the 4Runner has been updated many times. In 1988, it got a more powerful V6 engine. For a while, you could buy it as a two-door or a four-door model. However, after 1992, only the four-door version was sold. The 4Runner competes with other SUVs like the Nissan Pathfinder, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Chevrolet Blazer. Until 1996, the 4Runner was considered a smaller, "compact" SUV.
