The Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) is a group of leaders in Haiti. It was formed on April 12, 2024. This council acts as the country's main leader.

Its job is to lead Haiti until a new president can be chosen. The council will serve until new elections are held. Their term will end by February 7, 2026, at the latest. Haiti's Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, stepped down on April 25, 2024. After that, the TPC officially took over.

Why Was the Council Formed?

Haiti has faced many challenges in recent years. This led to calls for the previous leader, Ariel Henry, to step aside. A former police officer named Jimmy Chérizier was among those asking for this change.

On March 11, 2024, Ariel Henry announced he would resign. He said a new council would be formed to choose a temporary prime minister. This decision was made during a special meeting in Jamaica. The meeting included leaders from CARICOM, a group of Caribbean countries.

Who Are the Council Members?

The Transitional Presidential Council has nine members. Seven of these members can vote on decisions. The other two are observers, meaning they do not vote.

On April 3, 2024, the council finalized its list of members. These members were officially appointed on April 16.

The two non-voting observers are Frinel Joseph and Régine Abraham.

After many talks, a plan for this temporary government was sent to CARICOM on April 7. The council's job includes choosing a new prime minister for Haiti. This new prime minister cannot be someone who is already on the council. The council was officially created by a government order on April 12, 2024.

What Does the Council Do?

The Transitional Presidential Council has the same powers as the President of Haiti. They will use these powers until a new president is elected. Their term will end on February 7, 2026.

One of the council's main jobs is to appoint a new prime minister. They also choose the new government. Ariel Henry agreed to resign as prime minister once the TPC names his replacement.

Rules for Council Members

Members of the TPC must meet certain requirements. These are similar to the rules for becoming president of Haiti. However, there are some extra rules for council members.

For example, people cannot join the council if they have been punished by the United Nations. They also cannot be members if they have committed serious crimes. All members must also support the plan to bring international security help to Haiti.
