The Treadwell House is a very old and special house in Burlington, Connecticut. It was built around 1810. This house is a great example of old building styles called Federal and Greek Revival. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it's used for businesses.

About the Treadwell House

The Treadwell House stands in the middle of Burlington village. You can find it on the east side of the town's triangular green space. It is located between George Washington Turnpike and Spielman Highway (Connecticut Route 4).

What Does the House Look Like?

The house is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a gabled roof. There is a chimney in the center of the house. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards, known as clapboards.

The main front of the house faces south. This side has three sections for windows or doors, called bays. The main entrance door is on the right side. The doors and windows have simple frames around them. Above, in the triangle part of the roof, there is a half-round opening. This opening once held a window.

Another side of the house faces west towards the green. This side also has three bays. It features a more fancy, but fake, entrance in the middle. This false entrance has tall, flat columns (pilasters) and a decorative top part (entablature and cornice). A newer section of the house extends from the main building towards the east.

Who Was John Treadwell?

The Treadwell House was built around 1810 for John Treadwell. He was from a town called Farmington, Connecticut. At that time, he was serving as the Governor of Connecticut. A governor is the leader of a state, similar to a president for a country.

Even though the house was built for him, there is no proof that John Treadwell ever lived here. His home was always listed as being in Farmington.

A House with a Long History

This house has changed very little over the years, which is quite rare. Some of its design features, like the Greek Revival style, were used very early on. This shows how new and modern the house was for its time.

After John Treadwell, the next two people who owned the house were ministers. They worked at the local Congregational church. In 1970, the town bought the building and used it for storage.

Later, in the late 1970s, the town decided it didn't need the house anymore. Local people who cared about old buildings saved it from being torn down. They helped change the house so it could be used as a bank. This helped keep the historic building safe for the future.
