Treaty of Plessis-les-Tours facts for kids
The Treaty of Plessis-les-Tours was an important agreement signed on September 29, 1580. It was made between most of the Dutch provinces (called the Staten Generaal, which was like their government) and François, Duke of Anjou. He was supported by William the Silent, a key leader in the Netherlands.
What the Treaty Said
This treaty gave François, Duke of Anjou, a new title: "Protector of the Liberty of the Netherlands." It also made him the ruler, or sovereign, of the Dutch Republic. This agreement was officially approved in a city called Bordeaux on January 23, 1581.
What Happened Next
Things did not go well for François. On January 17, 1583, he tried to take control of the city of Antwerp. This event is known as the French Fury. However, the people of Antwerp fought back strongly. They defeated his army in a big battle. François then left the Low Countries in June of that year. He sadly died the next year from a sickness called malaria.
