The 1805 Treaty of Tripoli was a peace agreement signed on June 4, 1805. It officially ended the First Barbary War between the United States and the North African state of Tripoli. This treaty was negotiated by Tobias Lear, who was a supporter of Thomas Jefferson's political ideas. It became official on April 12, 1806, after being approved by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson.

What Was the Treaty About?

The treaty had several important points for both sides. The United States agreed to leave a city called Derna in eastern Libya. American forces had taken control of Derna during the war. The U.S. also promised not to help Ahmad Karamanli. He was the brother of the ruler of Tripoli, Pasha Yusuf Karamanli. Ahmad wanted to be the ruler himself.

Prisoner Exchange and Payment

In return, Pasha Yusuf Karamanli agreed to release Ahmad's wife and children. He had been holding them captive. The treaty also arranged for a prisoner exchange. The U.S. would get back 297 sailors from the ship USS Philadelphia. These sailors had been captured by Tripoli. In exchange, the U.S. would release 89 prisoners they held. Because the U.S. was getting more prisoners back than they were giving, they agreed to pay Tripoli $60,000.

Why Was This Treaty Important?

This treaty was meant to bring peace after a long conflict. However, the peace did not last forever. Tripoli later broke the terms of this agreement. This led to another conflict between the United States and the Barbary states. This second conflict is known as the Second Barbary War.
