Treaty of Tudilén facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Treaty of Tudilén was an important agreement signed on January 27, 1151. It happened in a place called Tudilén, near Aguas Caldas in Navarre. The treaty was made between two powerful leaders: Alfonso VII of León and Castile and Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona.

What Was the Treaty About?

The main reason for this treaty was to decide what would happen to the Kingdom of Navarre after its king, García Ramírez of Navarre, passed away. The leaders wanted to divide Navarre between them.

The agreement also talked about future conquests in Spain. It said that Ramon Berenguer IV, the Count of Barcelona, could take control of lands south of the Júcar river. These lands included the areas known as the Taifas of Murcia, Valencia, and Denia.

The treaty also had some big plans for other kingdoms. It suggested that the Kingdom of Portugal would be taken over. Also, the city of Seville was planned to be shared between Alfonso VII and Ramon Berenguer IV. As part of the deal, Ramon also promised to show loyalty for the lands he would gain, especially Valencia and a large part of Murcia.

What Happened to the Treaty?

Even though it was signed, the Treaty of Tudilén was never actually put into action. This was because of strong attacks from a group called the Almohad Caliphate. These attacks changed the situation in Spain.

Because of this, a new agreement was needed. The Treaty of Tudilén was replaced by another treaty called the Treaty of Cazola. This new treaty was signed in March 1179.
