Treaty of the Bulls of Guisando facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Treaty of the Bulls of Guisando (in Spanish: Tratado de los Toros de Guisando) was a very important agreement. It was signed on September 19, 1468, in a place called Guisando in Ávila, Spain. This treaty was made between Henry IV of Castile, who was the King, and his half-sister, Isabella.

In this agreement, Isabella was given the title of Princess of Asturias. This meant she became the next in line to become Queen of Castile.

Why Was This Treaty Needed?

A civil war started in Castile in 1464. A group of powerful noblemen rebelled against King Henry IV. They wanted him to step down from being king.

By 1465, these nobles had a ceremony where they pretended to remove the King from his throne. They replaced him with his half-brother, Alfonso.

When Alfonso died in 1468, Isabella, King Henry IV's half-sister, became the new choice for the rebels. Instead of continuing the war, Isabella decided to talk with King Henry IV. She sent a person named Antonio de Veneris [es] to help them agree.

What Did the Treaty Say?

After several meetings, they reached an early agreement to stop the civil war. This agreement became official with the Treaty of the Bulls of Guisando on September 18, 1468.

Here's what the treaty decided:

  • Everyone in the Kingdom of Castile would once again be loyal to King Henry IV.
  • Isabella would become the next in line to the throne.
  • She would receive the title of Princess of Asturias.
  • She would also get a large amount of money and property.
  • Isabella could only get married if the King agreed.
  • Finally, Joanna, who was the King's daughter, was removed from the list of people who could become queen. This happened because the King's marriage to Joanna's mother was ended.

What Happened After the Treaty?

Later, Isabella married Ferdinand of Aragon without King Henry IV's permission. Because of this, King Henry IV decided to ignore the treaty.

As a result, the King said that his daughter Joanna was once again next in line to the throne. This happened in a special ceremony called the ceremony [es] on November 25, 1470. This event was one of the reasons that led to the War of the Castilian Succession a few years later.
