History of the Church
The church was started to serve a new, wealthy area called Tredegarville. This area is now part of Roath. Tredegarville Baptist Church began as a new group from Bethany Chapel. Bethany Chapel was in Cardiff City Centre.
How it Started
In 1860, the minister of Bethany Chapel, Alfred Tilly, left with 111 people. They started their new church in rooms on City Road. The next year, in 1861, they began building a permanent church home. The land for the church was given by Lord Tredegar. He reportedly wanted the church to be shaped like a cross.
A schoolroom opened on December 3, 1861. The main church building opened in 1862. The stone used to build the church was once thought to be from Italy. However, it probably came from Galway, Ireland. It was likely brought over as heavy material in coal ships.
Changes Over Time
In its early years, the church had two small pointed towers on its roof. These towers have since been removed. Besides the land from Lord Tredegar, the wealthy Cory family also gave a lot of money to the church.
The church was very active in sharing its beliefs. It started several smaller missions in other parts of Cardiff. It also supported missionary work in other countries.
Important Visitors and Missionaries
William Booth, who founded the Salvation Army, held his first worship service in Cardiff at this church in 1863. This shows how much Tredegarville Church helped new Christian groups. Timothy Richards, a missionary to China, was also very thankful for the church's financial help. Henry Richards, another missionary from Tredegarville, went to the Congo. He is known as one of the greatest Baptist missionaries in America.
The Church Today
Since 1999, the church building has been a Grade II listed building. This means it is an important historical building. Today, the church has about 100 members. They still do missionary work, including sharing their faith in Roath. Roath is a very diverse area with people from many different backgrounds. In 2013, the church's members came from 84 different countries.
