The Treeing Tennessee Brindle is a special dog breed known for its hunting skills. These dogs are part of a group called "curs." Since 1995, their information has been kept safe by the American Kennel Club's Foundation Stock Service Program. This program helps keep track of rare and developing dog breeds.

History of the Treeing Tennessee Brindle

The story of the Treeing Tennessee Brindle began in the early 1960s. A man named Reverend Earl Phillips started it. He wrote for a hunting dog magazine. Through his writing, he learned about "brindle curs." These were hunting dogs with brown coats that had black, tiger-like stripes. They were very good at finding and "treeing" animals.

Phillips got in touch with the owners of these dogs. He found out that people really liked their skills. In 1967, he brought these owners and fans together. They formed an organization to "preserve and promote" the brindle cur. The Treeing Tennessee Brindle Breeders Association was officially started in Illinois on March 21. The first dogs for the breed came from different parts of the United States. Many came from areas between the Ozarks and Appalachian Mountains.

What Does a Treeing Tennessee Brindle Look Like?

Physical Appearance

Male Treeing Tennessee Brindles usually stand about 18 to 24 inches (46 to 61 cm) tall at the shoulder. They weigh between 35 to 50 pounds (16 to 23 kg). Females are a bit smaller. They stand about 16 to 22 inches (41 to 56 cm) tall and weigh 30 to 40 pounds (14 to 18 kg).

Their fur is short and soft. It can be "brindle," which means it has stripes like a tiger. It can also be black with brindle markings. Small white spots on their chest and feet are allowed. They can also have dewclaws, which are extra toes on their legs.

Temperament and Hunting Skills

Treeing Tennessee Brindles are very good at hunting. They are especially skilled at "treeing" animals. This means they chase an animal, like a raccoon or squirrel, up a tree. Then they stay at the bottom, barking loudly to let their owner know where the animal is.

These dogs are smart and fast. They have a very strong sense of smell. When they hunt, they make a special sound called "baying." This is like a loud, deep bark or howl. The breed standard says they should be "open trailers." This means they bark while following a scent trail. When they find an animal in a tree, their bark changes. A "coarse chop" sound is preferred when they are at the tree.
