Trenton is a town in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was founded in 1786. The town is located on the east side of the East River of Pictou.

In 1882, the community was named Trenton. This name was suggested by Harvey Graham, a well-known citizen. He chose the name after visiting Trenton, New Jersey. Trenton officially became a town on March 11, 1911.

Trenton's Economy

For many years, Trenton's economy depended on the TrentonWorks factory. This factory opened in the 1870s. It was first Canada's original steel mill. Later, it made steel products, train cars, and parts for wind turbines. The factory closed for good in 2016.

Since the late 1960s, the town has also had the Trenton Generating Station. In the past, other big employers included a paint company and a glass factory.

Modern Economy

Trenton's economy is now changing. It is moving away from big factories. Many jobs are now in services. Big employers in the area are outside of Trenton. These include a Michelin Tire factory in Granton. There is also a pulp mill in Abercrombie.

The TrentonWorks site was very important. It made railway cars for over 100 years. During World War I and II, it also built small cargo ships. The factory even made munitions (ammunition) during these wars.

In 2010, part of the factory started making wind turbine parts. This was a partnership with a South Korean company. The goal was to bring back jobs to the town.

Trenton Forge

Next to the old TrentonWorks site is Trenton Forge. This company also started in the 1870s. It operates one of the largest forges in the world. A forge is a place where metal is shaped using heat and tools.

Trenton has faced some economic challenges. Many local businesses and services have closed. The town now relies on nearby New Glasgow for many services.
