What is Trespuentes?
Trespuentes is a quiet village in the beautiful Spanish countryside. It is known for its long history and a very old bridge that gave the village its name. In 2015, about 265 people lived there.
The Name and the Ancient Bridge
The name Trespuentes comes from the Latin words Tras pontem. This means "on the other side of the bridge." This name makes perfect sense because of a special bridge that is still standing today. This bridge once separated the village from an important Roman city called Iruña-Veleia. The bridge was a key link to this ancient city.
Trespuentes Today and Its History
Today, Trespuentes is part of a larger area called the municipality of Iruña de Oca. However, this was not always the case. Until 1976, Trespuentes was actually the main village, or capital, of its own municipality. This older municipality was simply called Iruña. It also included the nearby village of Víllodas.
